The College of Biological Sciences (CBS) at the University of Minnesota seeks a Web Developer and Designer.

The Web Developer and Designer will work closely with CBS communications and information technology staff to produce, maintain and plan new iterations of the college’s websites, which include the dean’s office, student services, alumni relations/development, departments, research centers and field stations.

Duties also include layout for web-based electronic newsletters.

Priority is to update college web pages with current University style sheets, which requires new page layouts.

We are seeking an individual who is technically oriented, but has an eye for design and familiarity with design and composition principles.

Facility with current web technologies and the ability to spot and introduce emerging technologies are required.

Please note: It is anticipated that this position will be full time for the first few months, and 75% time thereafter.

This is a benefits-eligible position.

Minimum Qualifications BA/BS degree in a relevant field, including liberal arts, and at least two years of professional experience in website production, development and design.

Experience developing graphics, laying out pages, and selecting photos.

Examples from previous jobs must be provided.

Experience working with HTML, CSS, web page construction and appropriate software tools including a graphics editor such as Photoshop.

Experience using JavaScript codes for specific functions.

Preferred Qualifications Experience in an academic environment.

Proofreading skills.

Demonstrated detailed knowledge of JavaScript, AJAX and cross browser compatibility.

Moderate working knowledge of some of the following: RSS, Apache web server, Perl, PHP and SQL database.

Experience implementing a content management system .

Demonstrated problem-solving ability and leadership qualities.

Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, function well as part of a team, and be able to manage projects independently.

Job Duties: 75% Website Production, Management and Planning Production Produce College websites in compliance with University of Minnesota graphic standards and in collaboration with communications and IT staff to meet needs of administrative divisions, departments and centers.

Communications staff is responsible for information architecture, writing content, overall art direction and providing photos.

Web position requires mastery of current web technologies, excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Priority is to apply standardized University style sheets to college pages and reconfigure page layouts.

Other routine duties include producing email templates for quarterly web-based alumni electronic newsletter and monthly faculty-staff newsletter, surveys and online forms.

Management Maintain websites with creation of new pages and functions per requests from divisions and departments.

Manage routine content updates by clerical staff.

Monitor web traffic and provide regular reports to communications staff and others.

Create email templates in HTML and use Lyris to send messages to college listservs.

Monitor and fix broken links.

Planning Work with communications and IT to develop plans for future web site iterations.

Study trends in technology and web communications through professional organizations and by visiting other academic and corporate site to keep CBS at the forefront.

Advise the college on emerging technologies and trends.

Learn new technologies as needed.

Plan and lead web usability studies in collaboration with communications and IT. 25% Website Design Although pages are created using University templates, there is ample opportunity for creative design.

Familiarity with basic principles of design and composition is required.

Must be able to create web graphics, lay out pages and use photographs and other art with an eye for design.
